What It’s Like Having a Dog Join Your Session

November 06, 2025•3 min read

At Casa Bay Photography, we believe family means everyone—and yes, that includes your pets! One of the things that makes our Colorado Springs studio extra special is Q, our Rhodesian Ridgeback and official “studio sidekick.” He’s calm, goofy, and always ready to charm the kids (and the grown-ups too).

Q

Q isn’t just hanging out—he’s part of the experience. Families love him, and more than once, he’s completely stolen the show during a session. In this post, we’ll share a few fun stories about Q, plus some simple tips if you’d like to include your own dog (or other pet) in your family photos.

Because let’s be honest—family pictures are even better with four paws in the frame.

Why Include Your Dog in Family Photos?

Dogs aren’t just pets. For most families, they’re best friends, protectors, and playmates. Including them in your portraits:

  • Shows your true family dynamic – Dogs bring out those real laughs, cuddles, and “in-between” moments.

  • Adds personality – Whether goofy, calm, or full of energy, your dog’s personality shines.

  • Honors their place in your family story – Pets may not be with us forever, but photos keep those memories alive.

  • Keeps things fun – Dogs break the ice, help kids relax, and make sessions less about “posing” and more about playing.

Q

Meet Q: Our Studio Dog

Q is a gentle giant. He helps kids feel comfortable, often snuggles at parents’ feet during photos, and every now and then… he decides to star in the pictures himself.

Some of our favorite “Q moments”:

  • The Photobomb – During an outdoor family session, Q trotted into the frame, sat right next to the kids, and turned it into the family’s favorite photo.

  • The Scene Stealer – In a holiday studio shoot, Q curled up by Mom’s dress, and honestly… he looked like he belonged on the Christmas card too.

  • The Comforter – For shy kids, Q has a way of making the session feel safe and easy. They often warm up faster when he’s around.

Tips for Bringing Your Own Pet to a Family Session

Pet

Thinking about including your pup (or other pet)? Here are some simple ways to set things up for success:

- Bring treats + toys – Keeps your pet engaged and motivated.

- Plan for breaks – Quick water, bathroom, or play breaks keep dogs happy, especially outside.

- Match the session to your pet’s personality – Calm dogs often do well indoors, while high-energy dogs thrive outdoors with more space.

- Accessorize – A cute collar, bandana, or even a sweater can make your pet’s look intentional and fun.

- Give us a heads-up – Let us know you’re bringing your pet so we can plan for extra time and make them part of the flow.

What About Pets Other Than Dogs?

Dogs may get the spotlight often, but we’ve photographed cats, rabbits, and even birds. Smaller pets usually do best in the studio, where the environment is calm and contained. If they’re part of your family story, we’ll find a way to include them.
